An elephant in the room

A cloud obscured the moon. The soft gentle silvery light faded away. The shadows of the gravestones cutting their way through the silvery light melted, and the dog in the distance stopped barking. Everything was still. Even the gentle breeze that had wafted through the old yew tree slowed to a standstill.

And the Moon Came Out

Just then the moon came out.

The response was unanimous. “Whoever heard of a moon ‘coming out’ ”.

“And why not” the moon said with anger in his voice, and a little trepidation. “Are you trying to oppress the moon or something?”

There’s a doughnut in the baker’s window

Happiness is:

(by Unna Chokkalingam, 2018)

When you wake up

On a beautiful Saturday morning

To blue skies and birdsong

And sounds of water running into the fields

When you wander around the house

Barefoot and relaxed

Watering the plants, smelling the flowers

Hilarious afternoon in Kerobokan

The monthly Kerobokan Creative writers group meetup in Kerobokan was laughing all the way.

Some great stories were written. In due course, hopefully we can share some of them here.

Really looking forward to the next meeting now.

The normal pattern of our meetings is to draw random prompts, write for a few minutes inspired by the prompt, share our writings and then move on to the next random prompt.

It leads to plenty of variety, but every piece is very short.

“Mean and Skinflint” A short Story.

Yes I know it’s an odd place for something like that. Let me explain how that came to be.

Originally we had intended to buy the old house in the centre of the village, the one with the slate roof and flint stone walls on the corner of the village square overlooking the village duck pond, but we were gazumped. Quite unbecoming for a staid little English village I thought. Anyway, we were not prepared to play that game, and that is how we lande…

In Ubud we tried Neka Museum as a venue.

However,

so we left at 5pm as requested and returned to our usual venue of Warung Pulau Kelapa .

Penelope Hargreaves, Poppy to her family, was a mischievous child. A kind-hearted, sweet-natured, intelligent child, yet an inveterate mischief maker. Sometimes naughty, but never malicious, her pranks were invariably aimed at her twin siblings, Alice and Bernard.

Smolt for First Minister

Peter Smolt had spent his early childhood in a simple village far from the city that was to become his home. The door

There was a knock on the door . Jane spoke. “I heard a knock”

Peter said “Yes, I wonder what it was”.

Mary said “Maybe it was the door”,

Michael observed that doors usually do not knock.

Mary said”Never mind, I’ll get it.”

The Doorbell Rang

The doorbell rang.

Cecilia heaved herself out off the overstuffed armchair and grabbed her walking stick.

For a 78 year old girl she was still very sprite, only hampered by her ever worsening arthritis. Slowly she walked to the peephole in her door.

The Field of Death

(An opening to a story)

Mark Baker – (16 April 2018)

It was a misty morning. The white veil of swirling fog flooded over the silent fields, like a cream soup, and from above the weak yellow morning sunshine tried it’s pathetic task of warming the chill Autumn air and lift the mystery of this timeless scene. To reveal her cold, dead, blood-let, body….

The Final Chapter

Reflecting on life’s final chapter, as I do, lying here in my grave, I have to say the final chapter was not my finest hour. The energy had waned, joints, and eyes, strained.

Little by little things became too much effort.

The night it happened

(by Unna Chokkalingam)

A cloud obscured the moon and my pretty pink cubicle was bathed in dark shadows. It was that kind of night that made the call of nature particularly challenging to answer, especially when the loo was situated outside the main building. It involved walking down the corridor, “presumably lit” by the faintest of night lights, down the long flight of wooden stairs, past the portraits of formidable former principals, through the ma…

It was 400 minutes past November. The sun dangled in the freezing sky like a ripe onion peering through slicked thin clouds of smeared grease. The forest leaves crunched underfoot but the air was deathly still. Even the birds were quiet.

When Hubble discovered the universe was expanding, scientists took the obvious step of projecting back in time and saying the universe must have once been infinitesimally small. It is once more November, and as I sit here pen in hand under the light of a faltering desk lamp, surrounded by books and glared at by Google Scholar, I cast my mind back to two years before.

November in the Lakes is a beautiful time. The sun glances across the landscape setting the autumn trees alight in a blaze of gold, orange and yellow. It was on just such a day as the sun was making its descent to the horizon that we were walking the high moors and marvelling at t…

The internment of the late Robin Cock, in the Anbull family mausoleum, was not appreciated by the grumpy grave digger of the Church of St Genesius. True Story

(By Jenny Lemm)

The year is 1985 and I’ve just moved to a tiny village in the Welsh mountains with my husband (whom we will not bother to mention again) and my fifteen year old son, Paddy. I was immensely excited. For many years I had visited North Wales regularly as I was a keen rock climber, so to actually live here was going to be a dream come true.
